Matthijs Aanen
Master Electrical Engineering

Hello, my name is Matthijs Aanen. Currently, I am in my second year of my master Electrical Engineering at the University of Twente with a specialisation in integrated circuit design. By participating my study association Scintilla's studytour, I hope to get in contact with both Dutch and Japanese companies to learn about the electronics industry and—of course—make an amazing journey in a unique foreign courtry. Since Japan is one of the few non-western first world countries, its culture is very intriguing to me. I am looking forward to experiencing it first hand.

Ewout Baars
Master Electrical Engineering

My name is Ewout, I’m 23 years old and sixth years Electrical Engineering student. In the first three years of my study I finished my bachelor. Besides my bachelor I did a lot of committee work for the study association. This way I learned new skills and met new people. After my bachelor I did a board year as chairman of E.T.S.V. Scintilla. I learned a lot during this board year, planning, organizing and managing for example. Currently I’m in my second year of my master, robotics and mechatronics. A lot of good stories were told about the study trip to China which made me think of joining the next trip. The country and the group make me really enthusiastic about the study trip. Japan is the first non-European country I will ever see. I’m looking forward to the difference in culture, environment and companies compared with Europe.

Sjoerd van den Belt
Bachelor Electrical Engineering

My name is Sjoerd, I am a fourth year student finalizing my bachelor of electrical engineering and soon following an electrical engineering master programme. As an electrical engineering student I enjoy combining creativity with technology and exploring new applications of existing technology. Furthermore I am an active student focussing on extracurricular activities as well, by actively organizing activities and improving upon education for fellow students. Last year I have spend a full-time year as a board member of our study association to broaden my ambitions and perspective. Furthermore, I like to travel and explore new cultures, therefore I am more than excited and ambitious about this trip. Since I have never been east of Europe, I am very excited about visiting Japan, as it will introduce a culture to me that I have never experienced before. Japan is a country that is booming with technology which, for me as an electrical engineering student, makes Japan the perfect travel destination for a both educationally and culturally stimulating journey.

Friso van den Boom
Master Electrical Engineering

During my years as a student electrical engineering I have always been looking for extracurricular challenges and learning experiences. Already in my second year I joined the student team Green Team Twente, where I worked on various powertrain electronics. Before finishing my bachelors I spent a year as board member of Scintilla, whilst also participating in the travel committee of the previous study tour to China. This study tour was a delightfully memorable experience, and expanded my perspective on not only Chinese cultures but also international business culture. When the opportunity arose to be part of the organization of the study tour to Japan I quickly realized I wanted to seize this opportunity to further my personal and professional development. Japans technological and industrial excellence has always fascinated me and I am very excited to get acquainted with the unique culture.

Sebastian Bunda
Master Electrical Engineering

Hey! My name is Sebastian and I am a master student in Electrical Engineering. Since the start of my studies I have been active besides my studies in several committees. Eventually I decided to take a gap year after I finished my bachelor. During this gap year I combined a function within the board of E.T.S.V. Scintilla and a function as Electrical Engineer at Green Team Twente. When the opportunity of joining this study tour came up, I did not hesitate to apply. Personally, I haven’t been outside Europe, so travelling to a country like Japan would expand my vision on the world. Besides, Japanese culture and technological advances have always interested me, and it would be very interesting to experience them personally.

Jan Henk Davenschot
Master Electrical Engineering

The history, unique culture and its rapid pace of development make Japan a country which I have longed to visit for some time. The astonishing pace of technological and industrial development of Japan in the last two centuries can in my opinion only be described as nothing less than absolutely breathtaking. The cultural values and the work attitude of the Japanese people make it a society that seems very different from ours albeit just as developed as our own. Japan is simply unique and the best way to experience that is to go there. For which the study tour provides a good opportunity. I look forward to experience Japan and see its high tech companies.

Luc van Dijk
Master Electrical Engineering

I’m an electrical engineering student with a passion for physics and engineering, currently in my master phase and specializing in integrated circuit design and power electronics. Next to my studies, I want to keep developing myself by always having a challenge to work on and by chasing new experiences. After a year in an engineering student team, the next challenge is organizing, financing and participating in a large study tour. Japan is an outstanding destination for this tour, being known for its awe-inspiring culture and having been a major player in the technology and electronics industry for a long time. I’m very curious to experience how Japan is evolving in the ever-changing technological landscape and how they are implementing the newest innovations, hopefully catching a new perspective on what the future may hold.

Lars Essenstam
Master Electrical Engineering

My name is Lars Essenstam. I am now 22 years old and have finished my bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering. This academic year I have started with my Masters degree in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Robotics and Mechatronics. During my studies I am doing various extracurricular activities to both develop myself and build a network. This is also the reason why I am participating in the study tour Rising Technology.

Jessie Huiden
Master Electrical Engineering

Hello visitors. My name is Jessie and I am currently in my first year of my master. I have a passion for creating circuits and electrical systems. I therefore decided to focus my master on the direction of the integrated circuit design. Besides studying I like to be active in committees of different associations. This led to a gap year in between my bachelor and master in which I was the treasurer of the board of the study association E.T.S.V. Scintilla. At this association I heard a lot of good stories about the previous study tours. So, when I got the possibility to join one, I decided to join to gain an unforgettable experience. During my life I have never been outside of Europe. Japan is on the other side of the world. Going there and learning something about the culture and the presence of Electrical Engineering in Japan would be very interesting. The preparation still takes a long time but I am already looking forward to go on the trip.

Marissa Jonker
Master Electrical Engineering

The idea of visiting companies and universities abroad has always sounded appealing to me, so when I got the opportunity to join the study tour, I decided to sign up. During my study I enjoyed organising activities and courses, so I was very excited to organise an event as big as a study tour, hoping to gain some more experience as well. Japan has always been interesting to me, not only for the culture, but also for the impressive technology. At the moment I am following the master Electrical Engineering, specialising in Computer Vision and Biometrics. Having only just started, I am still orienting on what my possibilities are after this, and I think this study tour is a great opportunity for me to broaden my horizons.

Timon Kruiper
Master Electrical Engineering

Hi, my name is Timon Kruiper and I have finished my bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering. I'm currently doing my masters in Electrical Engineering, following the Embedded Systems (Dependable Integrated Systems) specialisation. When hearing about the study tour to Japan I didn't hesitate to sign up. I'm really looking forward to discover Japan while visiting different technical companies and doing cultural activities. Since we have to earn the money ourselves while working for companies, this is also a nice opportunity to get some work experience in the EE field. Moreover, I haven't been to Asia yet, while I've still met quite some Asian people here in Europe. I'm curious how they live at the other side of the world and this study tour is the perfect opportunity to experience this.

Bas van Laerhoven
Master Electrical Engineering

Currently I am in the last year of my Master Electrical Engineering, with a specialisation in Integrated Devices and Systems. During my board year at E.T.S.V. Scintilla in 2017-2018 I learned that I enjoy organising big activities and organising things from the ground up. That is why, when I got the opportunity I took the chance to help organise this Studytour to Japan. I am looking forward to all the things that we get to organise building up to the actual trip. And the new things that I will get to learn when organising a Studytour. During my bachelor I did not get the chance to travel a lot so I am excited to get the opportunity to explore an entirely different country with its own industry and culture. Next to that a Studytour is a nice opportunity to explore how I can use my knowledge in real life situations.

Willem Mulder
Bachelor Electrical Engineering

When the opportunity came to sign up for this study tour, I took it with both hands. Japanese culture is quite different from western culture, which also applies to the field of Electrical Engineering. I'm quite interested in these differences, and how they affect the involvement and implementation of Electrical Engineering in Japan. I'm looking forward to the new impressions and differing views on Electrical Engineering, as well as other aspects of culture and life. All in all I'm looking forward to a fun and educational study tour, and an enrichment to my life.

Sjoerd Nieuwenhuis
Master Electrical Engineering

During my bachelor Electrical Engineering, I didn’t take any of the opportunities to travel to another country. So, when I started my master Electrical Engineering, I felt it was time to do something about that. I had heard some great stories about previous study tours, so when the opportunity came to join the study tour to Japan, I decided to join. I have never been outside of Europe and I am looking forward to seeing what Japan and its cultures will be like. It has been a very innovational country since as early as the 1980s in high-tech applications, so I think it is a very nice location for a study tour of Electrical Engineering.

Koen Raben
Master Electrical Engineering

While studying electrical engineering here at the university, I always heard great stories about study tours to all kinds of exotic places. So, when the opportunity came to join the next study tour I immediately decided that I would like to join. As a student, I have always been interested about the implementation of electrical engineering in the world. Japan serves as a great opportunity to see how the field can affect a country. Add to that all the experiences gained by the tour itself and all the aspects of organizing it and you have yourself a great addition to your student time. I am looking forward to using my knowledge in the road to the study tour and gaining a lot of knowledge during the whole experience.

Steven Sibma
Master Electrical Engineering

In the years that I have studied in Enschede I have heard many positive stories about the study tour; seeing as how I am in the last year of my masters degree and this will most probably be my last chance to go I did not have to think long about joining. I have travelled in Japan before and fell in love with the culture and landscape, but during this time I have not really had any contact with companies or anything research related. Now I have the chance to help organise this amazing trip to this great country and see a lot of different electrical engineering related things.

Gino van Spil
Master Embedded Systems

Currently I am wrapping up the last few courses of my master. Next to my study I have always enjoyed doing other things. I have organised activities and spend a year as a board member of the study association. Recently I got a job next to my study where I have my own, mostly separate, projects in which I can use the skills I obtained during the years. When the opportunity came up to join the study tour to Japan I had hardly any doubts. I always wanted to visit a different part of the world to see how daily life is there. Since a lot of technical innovations come from Japan, I am eager to visit the companies behind these innovations and see what they are up to now.

Niels Sulzer
Master Electrical Engineering

Japan, with its culture and landscapes, has always been fascinating to me. The chance to go on the study trip was a perfect opportunity to combine travelling there with my study. Japan seems like a great country for electrical engineering, being home to so many tech companies. With places like Akihabara it offers a completely different view on electrical engineering than I think I am used to. Not to mention that I cannot wait to immerse in the Japanese culture. The process of organising the trip is also an opportunity to learn and practice soft skills and get an insight into the business world. I'm excited to discover what Japan has to offer.

Melissa Tijink
Master Electrical Engineering

Helly my name is Melissa Tijink and I am currently doing my master Electrical Engineering, with the specialization in computer vision and biometrics. In the acadamic year 2018-2019 I was active in the board of E.T.S.V. Scintilla, the study association for electrical engineering students. My function was commissioner of external affairs, so I got the chance to visit a lot of companies, that are interesting for electrical engineering students, in the Netherlands. This is already an elaborate career orientation, however, I would like to take it even a step further and see how things go outside the Netherlands. I think Japan is a very interesting country for this study tour, not only because Japan contributes to the development in the field of high tech electrical engineering and the automotive industry, it also offers a lot of culture and nature. This makes it, for me, an ideal destination for a study tour!

Lucas Timmermans
Master Electrical Engineering

As an Electrical Engineering student currently in his Master I’ve already learned a lot and have met many great people doing the same thing alongside me. A Study Tour, from working on cases and the organization to traveling there with an incredible group, seems like a very good opportunity to extend on both the things that I’ve learned and the people that I’ve met. Doing this while traveling to a such an interesting place as Japan almost feels like a dream come true. Japan’s unusual culture and monumental additions to the field of Electrical Engineering makes it stand on the top of my list of countries to visit. I am absolutely sure this experience will be one that I will fondly look back on for the rest of my life.

Thomas van Zonneveld
Master Electrical Engineering and Master Embedded Systems

During my bachelor in Electrical Engineering, I got the opportunity to study abroad for half a year. This amazing experience was the root for me to try to get as much out of my study years as possible and to travel as often as I can. So, when the opportunity arose to be part of the studytour to Japan, I hopped aboard as quick as I could. I am currently pursuing a double master’s degree in Embedded Systems and Electrical Engineering in combination with a board year at a sports association and multiple commissions, Yet, organising a trip to Japan was not amongst my experiences yet. Japan seems to be magical country mystified in culture and history and I look forward to experience these myself.
